Who is an Elementary Math Specialist?

Elementary Math Specialists are prepared to provide high quality math instruction to students, to support colleagues with math instruction, and to advocate for high-quality mathematics teaching and learning.

What is the EMS Program?

The EMS program at the University of Chicago consists of a series of six quarter-long (9-week) courses, taken over a period of two years. Coursework is designed for teachers in Grades 1 - 6 to develop their understanding of the mathematics they teach as well as related pedagogical content knowledge. In addition, teachers will develop their knowledge and skills as math teacher leaders in their schools. Teachers who complete the program are eligible for the Elementary Mathematics Specialist Endorsement that can be added to their Illinois Professional Educator’s License.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
